As many of you have noticed, there are some issues that we have been having with the site. I wanted to take a minute to give everyone an update on what has been going on and what we have been doing about it.

But first, some background. As some of you already know, we performed a server migration and a major tracker software switch in late December. Integrating with the new tracker caused us to modify large portions of the site itself. As we were beginning to work through the issues with our new tracker something happened. Our user community went from aound ~3500 users to around ~13500 users in the span of 4 days. Not only has this put a resource strain on our servers and staff but it has made troubleshooting our tracker issues more difficult and impactful. In truth, the tracker issues caused by our software change have been at least as big of a problem as our growth.

That being said, I want to assure everyone that we are working towards resolving the issues as quickly as we can because we know that they are affecting everyone. Here are some of the major issues we have been working on over the last several days.

Gateway errors:
These are caused primarily by load on our servers. We have been upgrading our infrastructure and tuning our software to accept our new load patterns. At this point these issues are mostly resolved but we do have some tuning still remaining as there are occasional times when people are reporting 502's.

Passkey not found errors:
Many people were receiving passkey not found errors when they first joined the site. This was a problem between the registration system and the tracker and has been resolved.

Unregistered torrent errors:
There have been numerous instances of unregistered torrent errors shortly after uploading new torrents. This was a difficult problem to find but turned out to be an issue with hash encoding. We put a fix in for this yesterday and this is now resolved.

Hit and Run/Torrent history problems:
The torrent history has been completely broken since we switched trackers. The issues included hit and runs being improperly applied, not properly tracking upload and download stats and negative seed times. We identified the problem early on. However, in trying to come up with a solution we determined that there was really no good way to track torrent history effectively with our new tracker. So, in order to fix this, we needed to modify the tracker source itself. This, of course, required a lot of testing and took longer than we would have liked to get fixed. That being said, we have installed the new tracker and are now capturing statistics properly. Because torrent history was wrong we were forced to erase all torrent history for the last several weeks so torrents you have been seeding will not show up in your torrent history accurately. This should not effect your overall upload/download stats. We will be monitoring this closely over the next couple of days to make sure everything is accurate.

Cache/Stats Issues:
Many of the stats issues people having been seeing are caused by the above torrent history problems. However, some are being caused by our failure to explain how the caching system works. The site here is built around holding cached values to limit trips to the database. Different items are cached for different amounts of time. Most stats are cached in the range of 30-60 minutes depending on the stat in question. In addition to that, your torrent client will only announce to the tracker what it has done every 30 minutes. When you combine these two things together you will see a delay of 30-90 minutes on stats updating.

We will continue to work on the issues on the site as they appear but I wanted to be transparent and provide an update on where we were to date. Thanks to everyone for sticking with us through our changes and rapid growth.
